Time Magazine Interview

I was quoted in Time Magazine in an article on “Frontiers of Fertility“. For those interested, it’s a nice read.

Interesting read but I didn’t see anything on men with non-obstructive azoospermia.

Have there been any studies on testicular tissue grafting to kick start spermatogenesis? Is that even feasible?

Glad you liked the read, Wade. There have been a few published studies on testis tissue grafting, but I’m not sure what you mean by kick starting spermatogenesis. Most would take the form of one man’s testis replacing another’s.

      • Wade says:

What I meant by kickstarting is would the injection of donor testicular tissue from a fertile man to an infertile man spontaneously facilitate spermatogenesis assuming the germ cells are present? Or would the tissue from the fertile man die off?

        • maledoc says:

If the testis lacks germ cells completely, a condition referred to as “Sertoli cell only syndrome,” then transplanting donor testis tissue wouldn’t be expected to generate new recipient germ cells. (Stranger things have happened, but the studies to date suggest that to be the case.) Sorry about being a bit technical, but your question is pretty specific 🙂

          • Wade says:

Have there been any studies where the germ cells are present and there is some form of maturation arrest where tissue transplant/grafting could be a possibility? (I guess I am assuming that the testicular tissue being transplanted is regenerative)

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.

            We’re not quite there yet.

Hello, I did not know how to submit a question to you.

Can you please tell me, do Letrozole and Anastrozole work differently than Clomifene, and are they also good treatment for low testosterone when the pituitary and testis are not damaged? I read medical journals that Letrozole increases testosterone in obese males by 200-400%. Thank you.

    • maledoc says:

You just did! 🙂 Letrozole and anastrozole are both aromatase inhibitors, and they are very different in action than clomiphene. Read around this blog, and you’ll find a lot of information on clomiphene and anastrozole. (Hint: put either in the search box, click on the blog post, then use the search feature in your browser to find where they are on the page.) I wouldn’t recommend any for weight loss.
